Really, really enjoyed this place. Been coming to SW Michigan with my family since I can remember, and this was our first time coming to this spot. The owner, Steve, and his staff took great care of us, and the personal touch was much appreciated: welcoming and warm, but not overbearing. My dad and I had the gyro, and my mom had the falafel. All were really good- especially the gyros. We had grape leaves as an appetizer, and those were great too. As Steve explained it, he uses thinner pitas and orders them custom from Detroit to make sure the gyros and falafels aren't all bread, as many are. Much appreciated. If you're passing through or have been coming to St. Joe for years but have never been here, check it out! Reasonably priced and great food.

This is definitely one of my favorite places in downtown St. Joe and I've been going here for four or five years now. Usually I go in if I see the manager or owner working, just because I like my food prepared by more experienced hands, but I've never been disappointed by the food. I haven't tried a lot of things on the menu, I go in for a gyro every time, which in my opinion are always fantastic and always fills me up. My only problem with this place is that it does take a little while to get your food, but it's definitely worth the wait

Well. We ordered a falafel sandwich and a gyro sandwich. The falafel, traditionally a fried chick pea patty, was not crisp. More like mashed beans spread on the pita. Instead of tahini sauce it was a thick sesame paste that was actually difficult to swallow. I did not finish the sandwich it was an $8 struggle. The gyro was equally expensive and disappointing. We were surprised to learn that the meat was just a couple rectangular pressed sausages. There was no other distinguishing flavor. The only reason we ate as much as we did was because we were starving. I would not consider this food authentic, fresh, or tasty. The service was fine.

Do not go here. The manager on duty was an older lady I did not catch her name but she would not listen to anything I was saying. I asked for tzatziki sauce on my gyro and she do not put it on there after having a 3 minute discussion about it. The gyro itself was mediocre and overall would not recommend this place to a friend. The other employees were friendly and apologized for the managers poor listening skills.

Very nice Fast Med.. hummus and baba came with good sauces plus the spicy hot sauce upon request, falafel sandwiches were delicious, i added hummus and hot sauce inside but you can request it spicy at ordering. the Pita bread was only neutral point, not fresh made on site, kind of flat and cold. I would request to try steaming the bread to give it some life. They offer baklava too! The greatest thing is the service and friendliness of the owner and staff. You feel so welcome here. I would come here again in a heartbeat, or take it to go to eat at the beach!

The sign on the table says " welcome to Beachside Deli... Not fast food" Really!!!! I think they went to the store to buy the hot dog, and I'm still waiting???? Even if it's the best hot dog ever I doubt I'll come back. Okay not the best hot dog in the world, and defiantly not the best hummus I've had.

I really wanted to like this place and it's not bad, it's just not great either. The food doesn't taste bad but, it's not nearly as good and the proportions are much smaller than what I've gotten in Chicago and SF. That and this place is a little pricey for what you get. I got the sample platter and was not overwhelmed. The portions were a little scarce and the falafel was just OK, a little on the dry side. A friend got the falafel sandwich and I saw iceberg lettuce in it. It's really the only Mediterranean game in town. A little competition might help improve the quality and portion size. I know that the appeal for this town might be limited for this type of food so I'm willing to overlook that this place is also an ice cream parlor in the front and that they also server hot dogs and cheeseburger wraps. Maybe a really good Mediterranean only place might not be able to stand on their own in this town. Too bad.

I was looking for some vegetarian food so I thought I might give it a try. I would only go back because it is the only place of it's kind around. The wait was way too long , the owner had no cooks. He also tried to order for me and my girlfriend, saying what we order would be "too much food." Not only was it not enough, it was bland, too expensive and he didn't have another item I wanted ready. I don't eat pita bread because of gluten sensitivity and he expected me to just fill up on pita. I got the feeling that he thought because we were in St. Joseph that no one knows any better and that he can tell us what to order, I didn't like his personality. Also he advertises as Greek-American which is completely false. The atmosphere was horrible the place had an overall cheap, grimy and unprofessional feel. The owner is unprofessional and acts like a used car sales man. I hope someone else opens up a true quality Greek/Mediterraenean place in the area so people can really experience what it should be like.

Please stay away from here! Extremely overpriced and the employees are so rude. I was vacationing here and the fam and I decided to stop in here since we are Greek and saw that they have gyro. First of all, they sell their gyro with everything on it, things that a gyro shouldn't even have. Lettuce for example, does not belong on a traditional gyro sandwich! We all got ours plain and with different things on it when we ordered, and the lady that was "taking care of us" was having a fit. She told the cook that we " all have special orders because we are very special people." Very rude and uncalled for! Its not my fault you sell your gyro sandwiches the non-traditional way. No wonder we all have so called "special orders." And their sandwiches are so expensive and they didn't even come with anything. And the whole time she was rolling her eyes and just acting really rude. I was ready to walk out. Then she told us our order total was $60!! For a few gyro sandwiches??? Are you kidding me? This was with fries and everything, but number one, you're a fast food joint. Two, this is not a sit-down restaurant. Extremely overpriced. We walked out and told them that we weren't paying $60 for fast food. They were highly offended since this was after they took our order, but they deserved it. If you are rude to your customers they will not give you their business. Please stay away. I'm surprised this place is still open. I hope they don't treat all their customers like that.

For good carry-out food, I haven't found many options in St. Joseph. And this place has tasty, high-quality, healthy, fresh food at decent prices. Plus, the place stays open very late. However, I think they need to address a few things if they want to stay in business: (1) Speed - they are unbelievably slow. Even when I call in my order ahead of time, it can take 20-40 minutes for them to assemble a greek salad and assortment of pre-prepared food (hummus, tabboleh, etc). The thing that makes it even more of an acute problem is that they are so slow and the place isn't busy. If they ever manage to bring more people in their doors, the slowness will become a major issue. (2) Interior - the ambiance in the place leaves a lot to be desired. Never once was I compelled to sit down and eat in the restaurant. They need to do something with the lighting and perhaps bring in a sofa / coffee table area to create a more lounge-like atmosphere that people would want to linger in. Good luck!

I really like the food here. Everything is made fresh and no preservatives. The owner is very nice as well. He came and spoke to us to see how we enjoyed everything. We had the gyro, hummus, and grape leaves and all was tasty.

Today I ventured downtown SJ. I really wanted Chan's Garden but they were closed. I went nextdoor to Beachside Deli, I ate there once and really liked the falfel. Today I met the owner, Steven . He made me the best gyro I have had in a long time! I will be back again, probably within ithe week!!!!!

All the marginal reviews ARE CORRECT. They'll empty your pockets, with their prices. The ONE THING that is free ... is their rotten attitude.

If you are in a mad need for a falafel or just any Mediterranean food, Beachside* Deli might be your cure. The service is slow but the food is good while being somewhat scarce. Price wise its on the "ah crap I paid too much for soooo little" scale. Sadly, the bathroom is the only place where this place fully shines, literally. There are plenty of restaurants at St. Joe, and if you have time to sit down and enjoy yourself, skip this place. Now, if you are on the go, and want something different and not involving fishy creatures swing on by this place. *The restaurant is nowhere near the beach, nor looking over it.

I've only been here once and I had their Gyro Sandwich. I didn't think it was bad but didn't think it was great either. That might be because we have a fantastic gyro joint in town that is much better. I thought the staff was very friendly but the service is kind of slow. They are open until midnight during the week and 3am on the weekends so that's a huge bonus if your looking for some late night eats.

The Mediterranean cuisine focused, Beachside Deli may at first glance appear to be a counter service deli but is in fact a table service restaurant. The owner is Moroccan and his mother's recipe for Casablanca Bean Soup is very nice. It is a thick and tangy mixture of white beans, chicken, tomatoes, onion and jalepenos. If you REALLY like raw garlic, get some of the spread on the accompanying toasted thin pita. Otherwise ask for the pita to be plain. Vegetarian dishes are available and next time I will try the hummus and baba ghanoush. This trip we tried the mixed lamb and beef gyros. It came wrapped in a thin pita and was filled with 3 or 4 hearty gyros slices, lettuce, cucumber, onion, tomato and tzatziki sauce. Not bad gyros, if you like it thick. The baklava selections were some of the best I have had. The first was flaky exterior cashew which had a nice chew on the inside and reminded me of a butter cookie. The second, the Walnut, was sweeter than the first but very lightly so as all Mediterranean deserts tend to be. It is an alternative dining experience and I will return to try the hummus and more baklava. For more reviews, check out dinemichigan.com .

The gyro's were extremely tasty. There was enough for me to eat half of it, and take the rest as my next meal. The owner is a great down to earth guy, who always seems to be in a great mood. "Happy, is the magic word!" as he puts it. "You pay when you are finished eating. That way, you don't like the food, you just say so, and can walk away." Prices are a bit higher than other Greek style places, but the quantity is much more. The atmosphere is very basic, and feels rather spartan. It was only owner present near closing time. It took him a long time to simply make 3 gyros. However, after eating, it was worth the wait.

Worst customer service I have experienced in St. Joseph...rudest ever, kept yelling at customers, maybe she was having a bad day, but I dont want any part of it lady! Finally, she overcharged me and never gave a receipt. And the food! What sort of Greek restaurant serves bad Hummus and Falaffel??!! The only good item was the Grape leaves appetizer. Am never ever going back.

My experience with the restaurant covers multiple visits. The fresh food is made to order and therefore does take time go prepare but I have always found the staff to be pleasant, helpful and engaging. The Mediterranean menu is a selection of fresh and healthy offerings. I love their oversized gyros and they ate well priced for the amount you get. The Tabouli salad is great for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the small version is a great addition to any of their sandwiches. The grape leaves with the sesame seed sauce are my favorite. My only problem is that I usually order 4 or 5 orders of them but at 99 cents for two grape leaves its hard to go wrong. I usually take some home for a late night healthy snack. I can say that my multiple experiences have always been excellent and I keep going back.

It was 10pm on Sunday in downtown St. Joe, I was starving and NOTHING was opened.... except this place. We went in and was a bit overwhelmed by the menu on the wall. (It's as if I had been drinking!) The owner/manager was very nice and suggested the Gyro - guaranteeing I would love it. I paid the extra $1.00 for black olives, Feta cheese and could have got peppers, but didn't want them. It was AMAZINGLY good. The pita was grilled perfectly. The meat was sliced thicker than I am used to seeing it, but was SO good. I will have to go back again when I am not starving to determine if it really was that good, but for now... "as good as it gets!"

great food.. was just passing thru st Joseph and loved the food... service was really good and I was amazed to see an older chinese man very patiently cleaning the front window both in and out... I had a gyro, which was recommended by the nice young man at the counter and a baklava & coffee for dessert. I typically do not eat gyro's as I usually not impressed... this one was amazingly good.. I will be back.. I then got to talk to Steve, the owner, a very nice and enjoyable man from Morocco. we talked about his loyal staff, and how well they treated me... He told me a chinese family now worked for him. They are like family as they have solved all his employee work ethic issues.. I highly recommend the experience.

Very delicious gyro and tzatziki sauce. I love tzatziki so I ordered more to dip my gyro in and it was fantastic. I had the pistachio baklava for dessert and also really loved it. The owner is very friendly and fun to talk to and it is the heart of St. Joe's near the beach. What a lovely location!

My family and I had such a great experience here tonight. It's a small place, but very very friendly and the jolly older guy working there made us feel right at home! Non GMO, gluten free options, even organic ketchup. I got the sample platter and the delicious potato wedges, delicious! My mother Loved the falafels, the best she tasted in her life, and she can be picky;). Highly recommended.

I come home to visit my family and am always on the lookout for vegetarian and flavorful food in the area. I tried Beachside while I was in town last summer and it was decent. This time around I had a restaurant.com certificate and called in an order and was pretty specific. Extra hummus, extra spicy and all the fixings in my falafel wrap and grape leaves. They were super friendly on the phone and when I picked it up and when I got home the food was awesome. I'm a bonafide Flavor Freak and whatever they added for the spiciness and not dry out the falafel (common problem with falafel) did the trick. The grape leaves and the tahini sauce were all excellent as well. I will definitely come back - especially because they were so open and accommodating to my personalized order (and passed my Flavor Freak Test).

I stopped by here for a quick grab and go lunch today. When I entered there was only a few customers inside. The one and only server/counter lady was wiping down some tables. She let us know it would be just a moment while she finished wiping down the tables. No problem. So I stood there for five minutes. While I was waiting, one of the customers at the tables had to walk up to the server to get her attention. The server was very VERY rude to the customer right in front of me. I wasn't comfortable with it, so I almost left right there, but decided to wait since she was ringing the customer out. I assumed she would take my order next and then cash me out too. Instead she made some rude remarks about the previous customer to the line cook and walked away in back. By this time I had been standing there for ten minutes and still hadn't gotten my order in. Being so uncomfortable, I walked out. This is during the off-season, too. I'm really surprised they've been open this long by treating the locals horribly.

After reading Sheena's review, it brought to mind my only experience at Beachside Deli. I went in here a few summers ago with my tween son on a busy hot summer day to buy a bottle of water. There was a woman there that I gathered was the owner that was screaming at the top of her lungs and dropping F bombs at a younger employee. The place was crowded. She had EVERYONE 'S attention with her bad behavior. I love Mediterranean food but not enough to frequent this place ever again.

I was looking for a quick late-night (Wednesday) meal and since the Take-Out window at Silver Beach Pizza was closed, I decided to go to the place I knew would be open. I studied abroad in Germany and anyone from Germany knows the splendor of the Doenor Kebab. I immediately went for the Gyro - I chose lamb because I was feeling adventurous. First thing that I noticed was the price - it was slightly over $10 for a Lamb Gyro with the extra toppings (feta, olives, etc...). I can afford it, so it was fine. I was a little irked by the amount of time it took to prepare. I was the only one in the restaurant, but I think that I was used to the instant service from the Kebab shops in Germany. I did take-out and didn't open up my Gyro until I got home. I was very pleasantly surprised at how large it was - so definitely worth the price! The gyro pita/bread was nice and toasty warm, it had the right amount of Tzatziki, and the lamb tasted fine - I'm not sure how old it was. But I would definitely return. I really enjoyed my gyro,

This was our first visit to Beachside Deli, and we were delighted to learn that they have #GF teff (La Tortilla Factory) tortillas available with which to wrap sandwiches! First real gyros I've had in over 10 yrs, which was delicious, and plentiful. Would have liked to try the felafel, but the young woman who took our order thought they contained a blend of chickpea and wheat flour, and I didn't request any further investigation. We were visiting in the off-season, but still found the staff to be very friendly, helpful and accommodating. Our visit would have earned five stars except that the place didn't feel quite as spic & span as we would have liked. This is probably due to excess clutter, dark painted concrete floors and clear plastic covered mismatched tablecloths, but I wouldn't let it deter me from eating there again. This is especially true because the gentleman informed us that no preservatives are used; no MSG is added, and they fry in cholesterol free, non-hydrogenated oil. It's also a nice touch that you pay after your meal, as this gives less of a fast food feeling (though food was plenty fast) and shows concern that patrons are happy. Beachside Deli is therefore, --GlutenNaziMom approved!

The food is fantastic, after you wait forever to be served. I used to come here a lot a few years ago, the owner asked me if I'd like to start working there. I was 18, had nothing to do, so why not? Those three weeks were absolutely awful and I cannot believe they're still open! On the 4th of July I had worked 13 hours with one 10 minute break, it was absolutely ridiculous, especially because that holiday turns St.Joe into a zoo and there were only 3 of us working. The owner had me coming in every day without any days off, no schedule to work from, and there were days I just left because I didn't think it was acceptable to expect someone to work for so long without breaks. When I finally quit, he scammed me out of a lot of money he owed me,wrote me a personal check saying some was left out for taxes, but that was BS. I didn't argue it because at that point I hated him so much I wanted to just leave. I wouldn't come back here to eat, even if it is good, because I know that the owner is scamming some poor kid and making him/her work unreasonable hours. He shouldn't be in business.

At first I was confused by this place. The name "Beachside Deli" made me think it would be a sandwich shop similar to The Broad St. Cafe. And as soon as I walked in I saw a giant hunk of gyro meat cooking and tabouli salad in the deli counter. The food skews much more to the Mediterranean side of things. My husband and I have never been let down by the gyro, the soup or the chicken ranch pita. The gryos are HUGE and the pitas are toasted so they give off a nice crunch! Don't go in expecting it to be quick. Their motto is "not fast food, just good food" and that's exactly what you get. Where else can you get food at 2 am in St. Joe and also see a magic show? Yes, that happened to us. And it made our already fun night we were having even better!

A good stop for lunch while visiting Benton Harbor. Food was good. They have an impressive menu. Not your typical gyro shop. The pita bread with homemade and fresh, which makes all the difference. I recommend the gyro. The only bad, but I have to possibly accept some responsibility, was that I asked for extra sauce on the side and they instead added it in the gyro. Too much sauce ruined the sandwich. The grape leaves were also good and it's an added bonus that they offer to warm them up for you. I've never had a place to do that before. They have a good kids menu and the chicken gyro was also good. In a beach side resort town like Benton Harbor, there is always an overabundance of places to eat. This place is definitely worth a stop for lunch. It wasn't "knock your socks off" good but it was a nice alternative to any chain or other typical sandwich shop. Would I go back? Yes, I would. I would be a bit more clear with my ordering though.

The food was tasty but not worth the 30+ minute wait to get it. We wanted to sit outside and I could see the server was alone so I waited in the restaurant so I could bring our food out when ready. Apparently this bothered the woman who was waiting on us and she made a few sarcastic comments and told me several times she would bring the food out. Very rude service and a horrible system for ordering and serving.

  • Jeremy J.

The gyros our group ordered were spectacular, and the selection of drinks wasn't too bad. The service was nice as well as the location of the deli from nearby businesses and the beach. I highly recommend the gyros or the baklava.

We met Steve, the owner of the Beachside Deli on Sunday night as we were walking down the street. We loved meeting him and the many other locals that joined the conversation as we sat out front chatting for a couple hours. I tried the tabouleh, babaghanoush, the secret sauce, & fantastic falafil. It was the the best I've had. (not greasy and so crunchy with the added sesame seed treat on the outside) Definitely give it a try.

great location, but food was less then average at best. The chicken gyro was for the lack of a better word nasty, dry, tasteless. a friend got the lamb gyro which was equally bad. the inside was rather dirty, grimy, and could use some major TLC. we will not be back. ever.

Horrible service and unsanitary conditions. Cashier handling money and not washing hands when returning to prepare food. Gross.
